Four years ago, the President of the European Commission sent mission letters to all European Commissioners, mandating them with implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their respective policy areas.
EU institutions, civil society and other European stakeholders have made substantial efforts to translate this commitment into action.
However, as we cross the mid-way point to achieve the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, we are increasingly off track in our efforts to build a more sustainable and fairer future.
The lasting socio-economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, persisting conflicts and the raging triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution are affecting the lives of millions of people, leading to increased inequalities and consequences on the most vulnerable.
On 18-19 September, world leaders will meet at the UN General Assembly in New York for the 2023 SDG Summit, to mark the beginning of a new phase of accelerated progress towards the SDGs with high-level political guidance on transformative and accelerated actions leading up to 2030.
The event “Halfway to 2030: renewing Europe’s action for the Sustainable Development Goals” will echo this momentum from Brussels, to discuss how to accelerate SDG action from a European and global perspective, with an interactive debate between policy makers, EU officials, civil society, youth activists, think tanks and the broader Brussels community.
We look forward to your active participation!
